Sound like xfs isn't running - this is the font server ....  try :
service xfs start
 
and then try X - if it works you need to set xfs to run at boot with :
 
chkconfig xfs on

It's the same in runlevel 3 after reconfiguring Xfree.
But log messages:

    ----------
    Could not init font path element unix/:7100,
    removing from list!

    Fatal server error:
    could not open default font "fixed".
    ----------

Resuming, there are fonts missing?
But where to select/configure?
