David:

If the battery light is continuously on on the UPS, why not just replace the
battery? That's much cheaper than replacing the entire UPS and solves the
problem of the shutdown software (assuming that the current UPS' shutdown
software works adequately well).

If it's an APC UPS (the most popular and best-supported brand), battery
replacement is very easy. Send an e-mail directly to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I'll
try to give you specific instructions and a source for the batteries.

If you do decide to buy a new UPS, I highly recommend that you buy an APC
product. They are reliable, reasonably priced, offer simple battery
replacement and have shutdown software for more O/S environments than anyone
else. APC also has knowledgeable and proficient free technical support.

In either case, you should recycle the old batteries. They contain lead and
should not be incinerated or landfilled. If you don't have a recycling
facility nearby, anyplace that handles car batteries (WallMart, Sears, etc.)
should be able to take them.

Good luck!
