I have no idea what resources are needed to run KDE, but I thought I would
add that I run RH-8.0/KDE on two AMD-450's. One system has 196MB and the
other 96MB. The system with 96MB takes forever and a day to start KDE (like
2 minutes), but I have no performence problems related to downloading files
from this system.

Have you tried another network card manufacturer? FWIW: I'm using 3com cards
at this end (3c59x). Also, have you checked to see if there is a new driver
for your current network card.
