I've got an odd problem with a server I am looking after that runs
Redhat 8.0. At random intervals, the box just freezes completely and
requires a hard reboot to get it to respond again. This is a pain as I'm
trying to run a web and mail server on it....I think it's managed 2 and
a bit days of uptime.

The box is an Athlon 1GHz with 512MB RAM sitting on a Chaintech Mobo
(with a VIA KT100 chipset), and is connected to the internet 24/7 via an
ADSL link using an Alcatel Speedtouch USB modem. The box offers the
following services (some internally only): Apache, vsftpd, SAMBA/Cups,
Caching Nameserver with BIND, ssh, Sendmail/IMAP/POP/Webmail using IMP &
mySQL; and it has all the latest security updates as of 4th Dec 2002 and
runs a stock 2.4.18-18 kernel. It acts as a gateway/firewall and has all
ports closed to the net except smtp, www, https, ftp and imaps. My thoughts
are that it may be something to do with the ADSL modem, but I can't
prove it as it leaves nothing in the logs prior to the freeze.

Has anyone had any similar experiences, or got any ideas as to what is
causing it? Or, has anyone else got experience of setting up a server
using British Telecom's ADSL service, and if so what setups have you got
running, and how stable is it (esp interested if a router/modem would be
a better bet for me to use if it's more stable...)?

TIA

Graeme
