I've had a similar problem with Mandrake 9.0. I think I've nailed it down to the CD access. Are you using a CD-ROM drive or a CD-RW drive? I've got this problem because my boot device is a CD-RW not a CD ROM. For some reason, my system doesn't like booting from the CD-RW drive. I'm about to change my cables round to see if this cures the problem.

Thanks When this happened to me it turned out to be bad memory chip. The system would hang/reboot/crash when trying to unzip files from the CD.
