Hi all

Disappearing sound after some days of use has always been my main
problem every time I install a new Linux distro. Sometimes I could trace
the problem to devfs or bad permissions. Now I don't know what to look
for.

A few days after installing RH 8.0 in my new computer, I lost the sound
from my audio CDs. I can hear my oggs and mp3 in xmms, but other audio
programs, such as audacity, fail to work. /dev/dsp and /dev/audio are
owned by root and have crw----- permissions, but root cannot get any
sound either. Audacity complains about not being able to get to
/dev/dsp.

The only thing I've changed since the fresh install of RH 8.0 are mp3
plugin for xmms, and xine. Maybe they are to blame for my problem. Any
hint about what should I check now? Thanks a lot...
