As Bret told you, your USB stuff isn't getting picked up. Seeing as your fairly new to Linux, I suggest you use the little green PS/2 adapter that is supplied with the mouse, and use your PS/2 port instead. It can be quite a daunting task for someone new to set up USB drivers properly. Ofcourse if you wish to persist, then if you can send us the output of what Bret asked for, we can take this further.
