RSYNC works well over SAMBA - I use it to sync my windows machine to my
Linux box at home for mp3s and family photos.

I know the budget feeling - that's why we too are using rsync at our company
location. The iSCSI implementation w/ RAID-1 could be implemented on a newer
redhat system as well since the tools for that are included.
