I don't believe that "cat /proc/version" works on every release of RedHat:

sh-2.04$ cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.2.16-22 ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version egcs-2.91.66 
19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release)) #1 Tue Aug 22 16:49:06 EDT 2000

sh-2.04$ rpm -q redhat-release
redhat-release-7.0-1

This was from a 7.0 system.
