Actually, it all depends on which version of spamassassin you're using.
I started using version 2.20, which exhibited this behaveiuor, and you
did have to use the -P option with spamassassin to have it work as a
pipe filter (see that 'f' flag in the procmail recipe?). I later updated
SA to version 2.43 and when I tested spamassassin with -P flag it barked
something along the lines of -P being an obsolete flag.

Versions aside, spamc is always better to use that spamassassin (except
under very light mail volumes), so you will be better sticking with it.
