You didn't mention what kind of network card you have. I always run into performance issues with many modern Intel network cards, so I routinely install the e100 driver and edit /etc/modules.conf so that eth0 uses it instead of the default (but buggier and slower) eepro100 driver. I beliveve it's already included in RH8 (but I might be wrong). If it isn't, you can download it from Intel's support site.
