Hi list,

I am sure other people are experiencing this problem as well, and maybe
it is something we have to live with, but I though I would put it up to
the list for input.
Can people put together some reccomendations as to how to speed up
performance in RH8 a bit, as it is currently about 4-5 times slower than
Windows XP (or other windows versions).
My system is as follows:
P4 1.5g
512mg 266 ddr ram
Nvidia GF4 MX440 graphics card 64mg ddr ram
80g WD 7200 rpm hard drive, with 8mg cache
Using a internet connection of 512k through ADSL connection.

I am finding both normal system use, as well as internet access very
slow.

My hard drive speed transfers are reported as follows through hdparm:
cached read speeds 428mg /sec
disk reads speeds 45.89m/sec
is this good,normal,bad?
I configured hdparm with experimentation, and this is the fastest I
could get it. DMA is on, 32 bit i/o support, multicount 16, unmaskirq
on.

What other system settings give improved performance for relatively new
pcs? If people could post some ideas, so I can look into them in more
detail, it would be much appreciated.

regards Greg
