I have the folling in my .cshrc file:

   alias xt '(echo -n "];\!*^G" > /dev/tty)'

This command changes the title of an xterm, and used to also change the
title of a gnome-terminal. Starting with RedHat 8.0, this stopped
working. Now I just see a bit of garbage in the terminal if I invoke
the "xt" command, and the title does not change.

What's the scoop on this? Why did this break, and how can I make it
work again?

P.S. Yes, I have "Replaces initial title" set in the gnome-terminal
profile.
