You might want to consult appendix H of the Official Red Hat Linux
Installation Guide and try some of the available boot options, e.g.
"ide=nodma". Your problem sounds much as if it is related to a
hardware problem, e.g. bad RAM chips, bad HDD, fatal disk I/O errors
and kernel panic. Also watch the virtual consoles (Ctrl+Alt+F1 to
Ctrl+Alt+F5) whether they give a clue on any fatal [kernel] errors,
I think Ctrl+Alt+F4.
