        Just purely out of curiousity...

Why Satan? I'm presuming that you are referring to the original
Satan and not the updated version, Saint, at www.wwdsi.com. The original
Satan, written by Wietse Venema and Dan Farmer, is almost as out of date
as the original shareware ISS scanner (which is still available on the
CERT site) that Chris Klaus wrote. Saint, at least, is up to date and
being maintained.

Beyond that... Why not Nessus? Nessus, AFAIK, is far better
supported and far more comprehensive and extensible than either Satan
or Saint.

The original "Satan", like the old shareware ISS scanner, is of
some historical interest, but, even in an environment where you want to
run two or more scanners to correlate the results, its of very limited
usefulness and will NOT show up most of the more modern high risk
security holes.

Just for a point of reference... I was the team lead programmer
at ISS for the commercial versions of the Unix based ISS scanner. I'm
now the Senior Researcher and Fellow on the X-Force at ISS. I run both
our own commercial stuff along with Nessus and Snort on my own equipment.
I wouldn't run either Satan or the old shareware ISS scanner any more
except for a belly laugh.
