I run Gallery and used to be watching the mailing lists regularly until they switched to the web forums, and now I don't watch it as much. Gallery performance has always been a regularly discussion item, and most people seem to be able to work around the issues by reducing the number of items per album - set up lots of sub-albums and you might be okay. Gallery V2 is supposed to be able to fix the performance issues, but I believe it's still a ways off.
