I think this depends on context. If you have a cluster of a hundred nodes, moving from machine to machine with a stack of RH CDs doing manual upgrades and clicking off options is just plain stupid. You absolutely need to automate the process to guarantee the integrity of your cluster. One slip during one node's upgrade and your cluster is not consistent and you will suffer. For most heterogeneous machines out there, I'd agree that automated upgrades are dangerous.
