I had the same problem. Use US English.

Hi, I am new to the list, and also very new to linux all together. I
decided I would go with Red-Hat, cause I had heard that it was a pretty
good system. So far very happy, and have hardly used Windows since
installing.
One problem I am having is with the keyboard setting. I have it set on
US international, but when wanting to use abreviations such as Ive (for
I have), I can not get the little symbol to appear. The key does not
work, and neither does the top symbol. I hope you know what I mean when
I say this. Also, will there be any more restrictions as to what keys I
can use in Linux? I found that on the English keyboard setting, trying
to use @ system, it gave me one of the above mentioned symbols that I am
having trouble getting on the current setting.
