I've had cable for a year and a half now, running Redhat and / or Mandrake and have never had a problem with the network/internet configuration. Upon install of either OS internet works. There's nothing to 'deal' with. Bet my 'lease' has changed hundreds of times without me even knowing about it.....

If you go offline, while they do a s/w upgrade (or h/w problems): bounce your NIC that is connected to the cable modem (ifdown;ifup). You may have lost your "lease" for your DHCP-assigned IP. Then do the same on any upstream Linux boxen you have.
