Make sure it uses a monospace font. I set mine to monospace 10-pt & my
similar problems went away.

I had this problem as well, but it simply disappeared after playing with
various settings. None of them were anything that seemed to have that
effect. But afterward it simply straightened itself out. Primarily, all
i did was adjust font and colors.

My personal recommendation would be to stick with xterm or install rxvt
or something. Gnome-terminal was too buggy for my use before it
straightened up and started acting right. I now use it only as a
terminal for slrn, so it's possible the above bugs have crept back in
since I last used it actively, though slrn still looks OK (not using
paste as I use joe as my editor for slrn).
