PPP and wvdial? > >thank you, > >terry > > Well, now, Terry, That all depends on a few variables, like, who is your ISP? If it is MSN or AOL, you are SOL, becuase they use propietary software that won't run on Linux. Likewise Netzero or Juno, too. I use SBC DSL (throught SNET, my local phone company) which can be acquired through Yahoo. Simply run /sbin/adsl-setup to set up a PPP for DSL connection. I'm new enough to linux, myself, that I have not used it with a dial up connection. I have a winmodem in my machine, anyway. Driving a winmodem (software, not hardware, usually a card installed in the machine) can be trying, as I did try to do this when I first started using Linux. Drivers can be found at www.linmodems.org Shouldn't matter what your ISP uses for servers, either. You;d probably be suprised to learn how many of them are using Linux or BSD or other Unix servers, but still don't offer support to anyone not using (yuk!) windoze or (cool) Mac OS. Many of them won't even support Mac OS. Did you know, for instance, that Yahoo's site and all of their databases are housed on BSD servers? (I see that you Yahoo...me, too.) Oddly enough, my ISP, SBC, works with Yahoo (like I said, you can order SBD DSL from Yahoo as a Yahoo product), but does not support ANY OS except Doze. Go figure... Who needs their support, anyway? Like I said, I am pretty new, but I have gotten my DSL connection to work with both RH 7.2 and 8.0 (couldn;t with 7.3 for some reason). Stick with this stuff. It just keeps getting more and more fun!
