For posterity: Compaq 3000s of this vintige use a cirrus CLGD5430 chip that appears to hav e abuggy driver in the redhat 7.3 X release: XFree86 Version 4.2.0 (Red Hat Linux release: 4.2.0-8) I added Option "noaccel" to the XF86Config-4 per the comments in the same file and bingo a usable display.
