This is just a guess, but does that machine have enough cache memory to cache all of 1GB? If there is only enough cache for 512MB, it will indeed be slower with more RAM. However, I have to admit that this knowledge of mine stems from "the old days", so I'm not 100% sure whether it still applies to newer machines...
