With all due respect, but have you tried to inform yourself a bit about what
you're trying to do? E.g. checked the Hardware Compatibility List for Red
Hat Liniux 8.0 (to be found on Red Hat's web site, in case you haven't
bought a boxed set)? Have you read up on what an UltraSparc actually is?

In any case, a Sun UltraSparc 1 uses an UltraSparc CPU - which has nothing
in common with the iX86 CPUs used in "PCs". Hence, what you're trying will
not work. Full stop. Sparc is not supported by Red Hat as of Red Hat Linux
7.0.

Therefore, you have the following options:

- Stay with Solaris 8
Not a bad choice at all, IMHO.

- Install Red Hat Linux 6.2
This is the last release that RH supported for Sparc. Quite reliable
(after you installed *all* updates - there are quite a few! Do NOT run RHL
6.2 without installing the updates!), but definitely no longer up-to-date.
Security updates are still supported by RH, but probably not for much
  longer.

- Install Aurora Linux
This is a Sparc distro based on RHL 7.3, supported by volunteers. It's
still under heavy development, though. See:
  http://auroralinux.org/

- Find another Sparc-based Linux distribution
Debian and Mandrake have Sparc distros, however, the Mandrake one
(7.1b) isn't very up-to-date, either. There might be others.

- Find another Sparc-based Unix OS
E.g. OpenBSD, but there are others.

HTH,

Thomas
