I have been using RedHat Linux for several years now on PCs and am familiar with the installation process. I recently got my hands on a Mac PowerPC G4 with 128 Mb RAM and Mac OS X v. 10.2. With Linux you can create multiple logical and extended partitions on a hard drive and
then mount specific filesystems e.g. /home, /var, /root, /boot to these partitions. My question is can I partition the hard drive on the G4 in a similar manner and then mount the filesystems individually if I'm using Mac OS X? It seems that the default install of OS X puts everything on one partition. This is not that attractive to me since the corruption of the filesystem or a filesystem that grows too large e.g. /var could cause the whole system to crash. I would think that since OS X is based on FreeBSD then you should be able to create and mount multiple partitions but this doesn't seem to be the case. I have never installed FreeBSD.

I know this is the Redhat Linux list and I'm asking questions about OS X and FreeBSD but as a longtime subscriber I know there is a huge amount of knowledge here and thought someone might been trying the same thing. I've written to the specific lists with little response and thought I might find the answer here. I apologize in advance in advance to anyone who finds this post inappropriate.

Any information is greatly appreciated. Thank you;

Sincerely,

Phil Skomra
