Nah, come on! :) You should at least remember the password for the
system's super-user account "root". It's the password you had to
type in twice during installation.

Concerning the strange characters, I would comment out the
SYSFONT=... line in /etc/sysconfig/i18 and try again whether you
will be able to read it upon next reboot.
