I installed Red Hat 8.0 today and was pleasantly surprised at the extremely clean installation process and interface. The Red Hat tools are MUCH better and cleaner than Mandrake, which I have on my server box and which I had previously heard was the most user friendly distribution. The difference is really huge! These tools actually work (with one exception, see below), and are well integrated with KDE and GNOME. A job well done! The only thing that bothered me during the Red Hat installation was that it would not recognize my USB mouse at first -- I had to use a PS/2 mouse until I could select an USB mouse in the installation. I have had no mouse trouble since.
However, what is really bugging me and keeps me from really exploring Red Hat and GNU/Linux is that I am unable to configure the X server properly. I had the same problem with my old monitor and my old computer with all the distributions I tried as well as FreeBSD. As my monitor (Iiyama HM903DT / Vision Master Pro 454) is not available in the list, I've tried selecting various types of Generic Monitor as well as most other models of the same monitor brand that I have. I have also tried to manually input (using Red Hat's graphical monitor system configuration tool included in the distribution) the horizontal and vertical ranges that my monitor supports according to available specifications. Despite that, I get no higher than 60 Hz if I select a resolution above 1024x768. My monitor supports more than 100 Hz in 1280x1024 but if I could at least get 85 Hz in that resolution then I might be okay with that. 60 Hz really is unacceptable and very unpleasant on my eyes. I had assumed that because my old monitor was cheap and unknown, things would work without a hitch on my new machine and monitor. But I find that I have the exact same problem. It's hard to believe I am the only one with it. So if anyone has any suggestions at all on how to proceed I would be most greatful if you could share them. Thanks in advance!
