if you are saying that you have no /dev/tty* devices then it sounds
reasonable to me that that is a problem.

[bhughes@bretsony bhughes]$ ls /dev/tty* |wc -l
    906
[bhughes@bretsony bhughes]$ 

This indicates that I have 906 devices that begin with tty in /dev on my
RHL 7.2 box
