Just as an FYI, the alias of root to marc has been there for ages.  A
bit of nostalgia from 'back in tha day.'  The 'marc' refers to Marc
Ewing - one of the founders of Red Hat.

/etc/aliases has the default for 7.3; root is

Anyway, I went ahead and uncommented it, changed
it to my account, and tried it again.

It worked.  So, I guess .forward doesn't work
under 7.3, they want you to use /etc/aliases 
instead.  Odd, but ok.
