Agreed.  I got the feeling that this is coming from an application and
they have no control over the AS400 box itself.  

Sounds like a morass of issues if that is the case here are two:

how are you going to "take over" the ip/port of the printer?

is the output being sent to the printer in ascii or someother text form
or is there a bunch of printer control crap in there too? 

I think we need more info on the environment details before a solution
can be proposed.
