The prb is with the ISA bus(its a ibm configured bus and there is little support in 
linux).

Any modem that attaches itself to the serial port will work , even if its not detected 
by the hardware configurator-daemon(i forgot what its actually called) the modem can 
be detected by wvdial.conf.

Practically any modem that attaches to a serial port will work with Linux
right out of the box.  If you have a local ISP in town, chances are he
will have a bunch of old modems that you can obtain very reasonably.
