Ok I run Squid and other proxy servers, I also teach proxy servers for a living so like all advice.......
With a proxy server installed you are looking for around a 60% improvement to really make it worthwhile. This means that for every object you requested from the web (and in this case an object is any single entity that comes from the web) you should server 60-66% from the proxy box. This builds up over time. You cant install a proxy machine and expect instant results, as the machine has to seed itself. All your users will be pointed at it and over a week or two their individual browsing habits will cause the machine to build up a log of their habits, and store the objects. So firstly, any tuning you want to do is really a case of altering a parameter and sitting back and waiting to see. To be honest this can be the hardest part. Squid itself runs the proxy port on port 3128 (controlled by http_port). This means the easiest way to start using it is to point the browsers at the cache by changing the manual proxy configuration, http to the proxy IP address and port (try not to use the hostname, as the lookup to the DNS introduces a delay) Then sit back and wait, I also advise the use of a Term session running tail -f /usr/local/squid/var/log/access.log. Have fun and let us know how you get on On Sat, 2002-10-12 at 02:43, Chuck Dutrow wrote: > > Does anyone have squid installed as a caching proxy to increase browsing performance >on your network?
