You mean, you've never had a processor faster than about 100Mhz or more 
than 64Mb memory ;-) I've loaded GB+ images on such a config, no 
problem at all. It's just a matter of not being stupid enough to assume 
that the complete image will fit into memory for all files. 
Unfortunately, most image viewers do seem to make such an assumption...
