A couple things I didn't mention that may aide in the solution (assuming one exists) - 1) this is using a Gateway Select 600 PC, 2) Mandrake had the same issues in their 8.x versions. I've found some get-arounds (building a different kernel than what's supplied) and I'm going to try them tonight. Of course, scrapping this motherboard and getting a new one is an option, but not one I want to take just yet...
