at the boot screen, select the kernel you want to boot, then select 'e' to
edit, it should bring up the series of commands.   Go to the one with
'kernel' at the beginning. Hit 'e' again.  Go to the end of the line and
add  ' single',  press enter to exit edit mode.  Now press 'b' to boot.
