Installation uses 2.4.7-10, which works fine. But I wanted to have the box with all errata applied. This one is a production server connected to the internet. It is behind a firewall, but still it never hurts to have the latest errata in place. > > proceed with it again tomorrow morning. I finally found what the actual issue was. The system has two SmartArray controllers installed. One is the standard onboard array controller, and the other is a SmartArray 431 (both Compaq). Kernel 2.4.7-10 did not find the onboard controller, so the logical drive were detected as /dev/ida/c0d0, with the root partition being /dev/ida/c0d0p3. Kernel 2.4.9-34 detected the onboard, and assigned it as the first controller, so the logical drives on the 431 came up as /dev/ida/c1d0 and root partition as /dev/ida/c1d0p3. I fixed my lilo.conf to point to the correct root device for kernel 2.4.9-34 and /etc/fstab (for swap partition) and everything went smoothly. > > Also, is this bug reported in bugzilla? > > Yes, for 7.3. I didn't know it affected 7.2... I see, but as it turned out my problem is 7.2 specific, since 7.3 comes with kernel 2.4.18-3 on initial installation. Thanks you very much for your help.
