I've gotten closer. For some reason, Mailman was generating log files 
like kudzu. Over the weekend we lost our Internet access, which caused 
more logging until I had over 60K directories in /var and soon I 
crossed the line--more than 64K. Once I reduced the number of 
directories in /var/log/mailman I was working again. I'm off to the 
Mailman list. . .
