It can be done, but it's probably easier to use "apt" than to do it by
hand.  You can get apt from http://freshrpms.net/ and work at updating
the packages.  

Guessing at the best order... start with the kernel, then initscripts,
glibc, each of your daemons, and finish with "apt-get dist-upgrade" to
get everything else.
