Here's an intersting tidbit:

    "X -version" gives the version of the X server.
    "XFree86 -version" gives the X version used by the client.

On local desktops this will be the same version. But I happen to
be working on an PC X-terminal that runs an older version of XFree86
locally. When I run "X -version" I get the version that's running on the
X-terminal. "XFree86 -version" tells me what's running on the main box
(where the clients run).
