To read Mac formatted files on Linux, I would recommend nedit (which as 
a big benefit is a very good, simple to use text editor).

It will not only read Mac files, but can also save files in Mac (or 
Windows for that matter) format.

To read Linux/Unix files on the Mac, as I recall (it has been awhile 
since I used a Mac), bbedit works well.
