First thing, please configure your email client to word wrap to 76 
characters or less. This is fairly common netiquette on linux related mail 
lists.


Second. I do wish I had a pat answer for your question, but I've not had 
the pleasure working with a USB modem yet.  One thing I would suggest is 
to use a terminal emulator such as minicom to talk to the modem directly 
using AT commands.
