use nmap <on machine which is exposed to internet>
   ex: $ nmap gatewayserver.com

There is every possibility that windows XP box might have been infected.
note that even well guarded machines get infected at times.

There is not enough information from your part to clearly segregate on which
machine is infected. is the windows Xp macine is just another node or is it
hosting some kind of service on the internet?

There are lot of virus applications to check. google search on the net might help.
also check for unusal behaviour /log entries and backup important stuffs to
temporary
   media.

if u are uncertain best options is to unplug the network connection of the affected
   system(your guess) and backup things(not any applications)like config files/data
files
   and do a reinstall.

-cheers-
