The iptables init script can't use the -i <dev> -o <dev> arguments? For example: -i ppp0 -o eth0? I'm probably misunderstanding you, but IPTABLES doesn't NEED to know what addresses it's working with AFAIK. Please explain what you mean if I'm on the wrong track.
