I don't know if I would call them cheap but we bought a 15/30GB dlt on ebay for $235 about three years ago and the guy threw in 10 brand new tapes too. Daily backups since then from 8 machines with amanda with zero media problems. I think these things are about as bullet proof as tapes get. I had WAY back, a little seagate 1/4" job that was as slow as an 8088 and a pain since the tapes just are not that sturdy. I think the thing that really got me going toward the dlt was the 500,000 write lifetime. and 30 year shelf life. Not sure I belive that but hey sounds good. I am sure there is cheaper better faster stuff out there now but it works for us.
