Please change the subject line when replying to digest messages, it's hard
to find what messages belong to a given thread.

Because you lost all of /var, your going to have a difficult time
rebuilding the database.

As Hal Burgiss mentioned previously, you may have an easier time
reinstalling. Backing up any custom config files and doing a new install
will be much faster than trying to rebuild from scratch.

If you do want to try rebuilding, I'd suggest Hal's method at this point.
use rpm -ivh --justdb --force --nodeps package.rpm for each package you
know was installed. That'll get you started at any rate.

Download and install rpmdb-redhat-6.2-0.20000308.i386.rpm and it can help
you as well. For a given file of unknown origin, you can then run:
rpm -qf --dbpath /usr/lib/rpmdb/i386-redhat-linux/redhat file_name
which will querry an rpm database of all packages that were included in
the initial distribution.

Good luck.
