I am trying to decipher a message in /var/log/messages saying:

Host client cannot be reached; transport endpoint not connected.

This machine is up on ssh connections, LAN, no load problems or strain
visible. But it cannot ping or connect to anything on the internet, or
outside. It can return full dig information on any host outside the LAN,
like nsol.com or redhat.com, etc., which is making it a little confusing.
This is most likely though the machine using the LAN's DNS server to get
this information, and using that same DNS server to connect to the net for
dig info? Named is only running on the DNS primary server.

Either way, ipchains has been checked, killed, restarted, stopped, on both
the DNS server and on the problematic machine. I take it cables are no issue
b/c of LAN, ssh success. I almost feel it might be something with my old and
beat up 5 port hub, but lights are all green and normal.

Any clues? I have never seen this message until now. RH 7.2 fully up2date on
both linux boxes.
