Here is what I suggest:

  Reboot

  When Grub screen is displayed, press 'e' to edit the kernel command
  line.

  Add ' 1' to the end of the command line, then press [Enter], then [b]
  to boot.

  Run authconfig to make sure your authentication srtup is correct. You
  may want to change it to MD5 + Shadow.

  Change the root passwd using the command:  passwd

  Go to your desired runlevel:  telinit 3   (console/text login)
                           or:  telinit 5   (X/graphical login)
