Maybe there is nothing wrong. This may happen if you start a window manager with a gray screen, no icon, no panel (like twm in the vnc default case). Look at the file named xstartup in your ~/.vnc/ directory. It is the script which launches your window manager. You may replace what is in it with starkde or exec icewm or gnome-session or anything else. Or use twm !
