Thanks to everyone who replied! As Ed Wilts correctly noted, I should have updated the kernel much earlier. However, sometimes I'm too conservative for my own good (system seems faster now with the new kernel, too!).
I've up2date'd the kernel packages and everything went fine. Cheers, Mike -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Mike Pelley Sent: Saturday, August 10, 2002 12:14 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Up2date, BIND and kernel 2.2.16-22smp Folks, I've just bollock'ed a nicely-running 7.0 system. I ran up2date and it came up with the new version of BIND to be installed as being 9.2.1.0.70.2. Fine, that's seems like a good update for a buffer overflow issue. So, I run it. However, I'm still running the 2.2.16-22 kernel (working just great!), so the /etc/rc.d/init.d/named line named -u named ${OPTIONS} no longer works; failing (since I'm still runnign the 2.2.16-22 kernel) with the message: Starting named: named: -u not supported on Linux kernels older than 2.3.99-pre3 or 2.2.18 when using threads I tried running it withoug the "-u named" option, and it tries to start, but, alas, no luck. Here is what my /var/log/messages file returns: Aug 10 11:47:29 neptune named[31051]: starting BIND 9.2.1 Aug 10 11:47:29 neptune named[31051]: using 1 CPU Aug 10 11:47:29 neptune named[31054]: loading configuration from '/etc/named.conf' Aug 10 11:47:29 neptune named[31054]: no IPv6 interfaces found Aug 10 11:47:29 neptune named[31054]: listening on IPv4 interface lo, 127.0.0.1#53 Aug 10 11:47:29 neptune named[31054]: listening on IPv4 interface eth0, 192.168.0.250#53 Aug 10 11:47:29 neptune named[31054]: zone 'pelleys.com' allows updates by IP address, which is insecure Aug 10 11:47:29 neptune named[31054]: command channel listening on 127.0.0.1#953 Aug 10 11:47:29 neptune named[31054]: couldn't open pid file '/var/run/named/named.pid': Permission denied Aug 10 11:47:29 neptune named[31054]: exiting (due to early fatal error) Aug 10 11:47:29 neptune named: named startup failed Of course, I've tried to downgrade to bind-8.2.3-1, but all sorts of dependancies now exist. What do I have to do to modify /etc/rc.d/init.d/named to run under the 2.2.16-22 kernel? My record with recompiling the kernel is only about 30% success, so I don't want to go down that route unless I absolutely have to. I've run up2date on the kernel on other systems with success (this is a generic HP NetServer LD Pro, nothing special at all - no software RAID, etc), so any opinions (asbestos flame suit - purist will say do a recompile, uggghh)?
