Does it eventually get to the point where you can login without X?

If so, then you should login as root...go to /etc and edit inittab.

Cange:

id:5:initdefault:

to

id:3:initdefault:

And then reboot....

After you've rebooted, X will not be starting and you can run 
Xconfigurator to properly set up your display....which is probably the 
source of your problem.

After you do that...try running "startx" before changing back to "5" in 
your inittab.
